Current Projects

Engineering endogenous peptides for brain-targeted therapeutics and drug delivery systems

Funder: NI Department for the Economy

Dates: 2026 – 2029

PI: Dr Lucia Lombardi (Queen’s University Belfast)

Collaborators: Dr Paulina Quintanilla (University College London), Dr Sophie Morse (Imperial College London), Dr Yuval Elani (Imperial College London)

Abstract: The project aims to develop engineered peptides and biomimetic platforms capable of enabling safe, targeted and efficient delivery of therapeutic compounds to the brain. The research will focus on designing molecules that can traverse the BBB without disrupting its structure or function and that can interact selectively with specific targets within the brain. In doing so, the project seeks to create a new platform technology for treating a range of disorders that currently lack effective CNS delivery solutions.
